Summary:
The Datacenter Service Owner maintains the datacenter and equipment within the datacenter. Duties include maintaining an optimally controlled environment for servers, providing smart hands support within the datacenter and assisting with troubleshooting network and server problems. The Datacenter Service Owner will identify opportunities for improvement and drive improvement by leveraging others, such as ensuring that sufficient power, cooling and security controls are in place within the datacenter.
The Datacenter Service Owner is skilled at documenting & fixing any technical problems in person and resolving issues with proper priority and a high level of accuracy and efficiency.
Apart from possessing strong analytical and problem-solving skills, these technicians must have solid verbal, written & inter-personal communication skills and should be able to work calmly when under pressure.
Datacenter technicians should be good team players and must take appropriate ownership & responsibility for all reported datacenter maintenance & issues
Job Description and Purpose:
The Datacenter Service Owner should provide enterprise-level support of DFIN infrastructure both on site & remotely. An ideal datacenter technician can quickly research, diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve issues identified by stakeholders or clients.
• Provide support for the installation and configuration of all on-site datacenter infrastructure to support effective and efficient technology use at the site (e.g. electrical power, HVAC, LAN, servers, network devices, etc.) and perform management functions for all datacenter assets within the site(s).
• Create and maintain a roadmap for datacenter services with a view to testing, improving and replacing infrastructural components within their respective lifecycles.
• Partner with MSPs to align on best practices in MSP-managed datacenters to ensure consistency within the enterprise.
• After-hours work may be required to support datacenter emergencies and/or change tasks implemented outside of regular business hours.
• Collaboration with local Site IT and Desktop Services technicians as workload permits.
• Part-time role includes flexibility on a day-to-day basis but will require a schedule to be detailed and maintained monthly so as to provide a predictable level of availability.
Responsibilities:
Work is typically performed under minimal daily supervision, receiving guidance from their leader about the work that needs to be completed. This position needs to be able to exercise high levels of discretion and latitude in completing tasks. There are aspects of the role that are physically demanding, handling heavy computer equipment.
• Duties include monitoring the day-to-day health of servers (power, heat, etc.)
• Maintaining an optimally controlled environment for devices within the datacenter along with a road map for operational improvements.
• Troubleshooting network and server problems. They may also be required to perform urgent repairs outside of business hours.
• Prioritise problems based on severity, urgency and impact to the business and track all outstanding incidents until successful resolution. May handoff extremely complex technical problems to higher-level support or other IT department staff if required.
• Upgrading internal system components, including CPUs, memory, hard drives, and network cables.
• Collaborate with enterprise support groups and outside vendors to resolve problems or issues.
• Support by providing oversight and physical assistance to local IT vendors, hardware vendors and local IT service providers for the datacenter. Including working with in-house Maintenance Technicians on Datacenter power distribution, HVAC deployment and efficiency.
• Coordinate through the change management process to move, install, upgrade, remove and configure on-site datacenter assets and supporting infrastructure.
• Perform installation and decommissioning of devices as required and approved through the change management processes.
• Maintain the asset management system (additions/changes/deletions) for accurate tracking of all datacenter assets within the site(s).
• Support and conduct routine audits of on-site datacenter assets and processes to ensure compliance with established company policies and procedures, as well as compliance with Governmental regulations and policies.
• Monitoring and performing on-going maintenance on servers and network equipment.
• Protecting company data and applications by preventing the overheating of datacenter components.
• Running hardware diagnostics and replacing failing parts in a timely manner.
• Taking direction from software and network engineering teams on cybersecurity and network efficiency.
• Documenting processes and keeping event logs.
• Advising on the procurement of new datacenter equipment.
• Keeping track of developing trends in datacenter technologies
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate has 3+ years of experience as a datacenter technician with mid to large-sized companies (500+ associates) and has demonstrated skills in:
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or similar.
• CompTIA ServerPlus, CompTIA Network, or CCNP certification would be advantageous.
• In-depth knowledge of datacenter environments, servers, and network equipment.
• Experience in installing, monitoring, and maintaining datacenter equipment.
• Exceptional ability to work as part of a team, provide IT support, and resolve errors.
• Ability to keep up with advancements in datacenter infrastructure and technologies.
• Proficiency in documenting processes
